The University of Hawaii football team opens its last season in the WAC today by hosting the Colorado Buffaloes. Hawaii will not only look to start the 2011 football season with a win, but they will also be looking to take some revenge on Colorado, who beat them last year 33-13 in Colorado.
Several changes have been made last year on both teams. Most notably, UH will compete for the last year in the WAC before moving to the Mountain West Conference. On the other side, Colorado starts its inaugural year in the PAC 10 (now the PAC 12) Conference.
The Warriors are trying to go out of the WAC in style, hoping to take home the WAC title in their final season in the conference. The Warriors are coming off a pretty successful 10-4 season, one in which they took home a share of the WAC title. Last year was the first time they had won a WAC title since 2007; the year Colt Brennan led the team to an undefeated season.
The Warriors are actually the preseason favorite to win the WAC, which is something new for Hawaii. Quarterback Bryant Moniz is the consensus preseason WAC player of the year and is mentioned on the watch list of nearly every major award as the nation’s top player and quarterback.
The Warriors have a chance to have a special year, so lets see how they start. The opening game can be seen on ESPN 2 today and kickoff is at 4:15 pm Hawaii time.
