UNLV came into this game with an 0-2 record, previously being blown out in their last two games. Hawaii came in with a record of 1-1, with a win against Colorado at home, and a loss against Washington in a game they could have one.
I am not here to make excuses for Hawaii, simply put, they fumbled too much and they didn’t come to play. Why? Who knows, maybe they thought they could roll in their based on other games and just waltz out with an easy victory. This was not the case.
Tim Cornett ran for an 80-yard touchdown and Phillip Payne caught two scoring passes to help UNLV shock a fumble-prone Hawaii 40-20 on Saturday night. Cornett’s first-quarter run was the longest rushing score for the Rebels in 22 years.
The Warriors (1-2), which were a 20 1/2-point favorite, fumbled four times. UNLV’s Caleb Herring was 17 of 29 passing for 178 yards and two touchdowns, both to Payne. Hawaii’s Bryant Moniz completed 20 of 36 for 233 yards two touchdowns, both to Justin Clapp.
All of Moniz’s games have been really rough, Sure they got the win in the opener, but Moniz had to run for all of his scores, which is not what Hawaii football is about.
As embarrassing as the loss was for us to watch, I am sure it was all the more embarrassing for coach Mac and for the kids.
Where does Hawaii go from here? To be honest they really have nowhere to go but up. The WAC is still very winnable, especially if the Warriors can get their act together. The problem of road games remains though.
If they are going to get blown out by one of the worst teams in the nation, what is going to happen during some of the tougher road games?
