Last week Hawaii suffered a humiliating loss in San Jose State, losing on a last second touchdown pass. Tonight, the Warriors were out for redemption, and redemption is what they found. Hawaii defeated New Mexico State in their homecoming game tonight 45-34.
A crowd of 30,568 watched the Warriors come out of the gates fast, stumble a bit, and then put the pedal to the metal, as they traded scores with New Mexico State in the second half. The affair was a high-scoring one – as most UH/New Mexico State games are, but the outcome was never really in doubt.
Both teams traded punches for a majority of the evening, as Hawaii always led, but was never really able to completely close the game out, as New Mexico State kept scoring.
The last two games have become a concern on the defensive side of the ball. Hawaii’s defense continues to give up too many points to lower caliber teams, as witnessed tonight, last week against San Jose State, and of course at the debacle that was the UNLV game.
Despite that, Hawaii did escape with the victory, running their overall record to 4-3 and their WAC record to 2-1. The Warriors will now set their sites on Moscow, Idaho, as they will leave on their last trip their Wednesday to take on the Idaho Vandals next Saturday.
