Maui police are reporting that a 25-year-old Lahaina man died Thursday night after the motorcycle he was driving crashed into a minivan in Kaanapali.
Maui police said that Jesse Grafft died on Honoapiilani Highway at 10:51 p.m. when his motorcycle collided with the minivan which was making a left turn from Honoapiilani Highway to Kaanapali Parkway.
Maui police said they are still trying to determine if speed, drugs and alcohol played a part in the accident. Determining something like this could take a while, so we may not know for a few days.
There were two passengers inside the minivan, both of whom suffered minor injuries and were treated at the crash scene. This is Maui County’s 18th fatal crash of 2011 compared to 11 at the same time last year.
Looks like people are continuing to be unsafe on the roads this year. The man was not wearing a helmet.
There are witnesses who were at the scence who were not interviewed by the police. This particular witness tried to give a statement but was refused by the police. He is a local who was behind the van that ran the red light. The witness came to my son’s memorial service on Nov 13th at Wahikuli Beach Park and said he pulled my son from the crash scene to the side of the road and the police did nothing for him. This report says a couple of days for an investigation. We were told by police it could be a couple of months. They have written this off as another random accident. The man driving the van was a tourist from Idaho.
