The Health Department has issued a “brown water advisory” for Oahu in at attempt to urge people to stay away from flood waters and storm water runoff on Oahu because of possible contamination.
Two manholes overflowed at the Kaneohe Wastewater Pre-Treatment Facility on Mahalani Circle, spilling an estimated 300 gallons of wastewater per minute from both manholes, the Health Department reported. Residents are warned to say out of waters fronting Mahalani Circle to Kaimalu Place.
The brown water advisory is not complicated. Basically, if you see brown water running or flowing near you then stay out of it. The waters could be contaminated from overflowing cesspools, sewer manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals, and associated flood debris caused by heavy rains.
It would be wise to follow this advisory, as there is no need to get sick over wanting to act silly in muddy looking water. It is especially important to keep an eye on the keiki as well.
