The drama and enigma that is Colt Brenna continues. Today Colt Brennan has signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. This according to a team announcement earlier today.
The saga of Colt Brennan, one of which is obviously of particular interest to the sports fans of Hawaii, continues to play out, with another interesting story on his long and muddled post college road popping up today.
If you were a fan of University of Hawaii football, or are a fan, you will know that rarely in the program’s history – if ever, was there as much excitement surrounding college football in Hawaii as there was when Colt Brennan led the Warriors for three years. After setting and breaking almost every offensive category in NCAA history, Brennan made some poor choices (reportedly) right before the Sugar Bowl in 2007, had perhaps his worst performance as a college quarterback, and seemingly has been unable to recover since then.
Since being drafted by the Washington Redskins in the 2007 NFL draft, Colt Brennan has bounce around here and there, while never being able to make a team after the Redskins released him. He had a stint with the Raiders, but that didn’t pan out past the preseason.
There have a been a number of negative reports regarding Brennan, at least more than I am sure he would like. He doesn’t have a good enough arm, he is arrogant, he came to camp out of shape. Stories like this have plagued Brennan since he left UH and have definitely affected his career.
Of course some things were out of his control. He was injured for a year, and he also involved in a head on collision on the Big Island (Hawaii) that dealt him another setback.
His most recent chance before today came a while back when Jerry Glanville and the Hartford Colonials signed him to a deal. Many speculated though that Brennan was simply the benefactor of knowing Glanville, and probably would have started no matter what because of their personal relationship. Whether that was true or not we will never know, as the team folded shortly after the signing.
So this brings me to my last question, or questions if you will. Is this the last chance for Brennan to try and resume and continue a professional career in football? Will another opportunity come along if this one doesn’t work out? Will he even see the field for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League, or will he ride the bench and sit and number two or three on the depth chart?
My personal feeling is that this is his last chance. Last chance to play, last chance to erase some of the bad publicity he has received, last chance to try and make an NFL roster at a later date….. last chance with football related activities period; at least as a professional.
It hasn’t been quite the run that many of us expected, especially those who saw him play week in and week out in the islands. However, this does at least represent some sort of last chance for Colt Brennan to try and play. It should be interesting to see what happens.
All reports indicate that the current starting quarterback for Saskatchewan Roughriders is in no danger of losing his job. However, this will be good for Colt. It represents a chance for him to compete for something and try to earn it. So often he has been labeled as someone who just received things (i.e. Jerry Glanville signing him) but now he will have to fight to play.
Good luck Colt. Last chance to make it in football and put to rest all your doubters.
Colt was a great college QB who has never really been given a fair shot after college. Personlly, I don’t care if he plays or not, but I would be interested and would like to see him on the field to put all of the speculation to rest. I’m tired of hearing how good he was.. let the guy play so we can all stop reading the stories. Although, this will be the last story because he will be selling insurance next year at this time if he doesn’t make it in the CFL. See ya Colt
Colt’s PATHETIC decline continues. How many leagues is this going to fail in before he realizes he sucks? Stop embarrassing us Colt!!!!!
Colt Brennan never got to play a regular season in the NFL, but in the pre-season where most of the stars are throwing 55% completions, he completed 70% of his passes. I think Colt, like Joe Montana who was a late draft pick, if he can hang around football just long enough will eventually light up the NFL. Oh, and that thing about Jerry Glanville just giving Colt the job for old time sakes, you need to go back and read what Jerry Glanville said about being the defensive coordinator against Colt at practice every day in Hawaii. He said watching Colt operate, even at practice, was not like watching a football team, it was more like watching someone play a video game. June Jones who has been around some great QBs called Colt one of the two most accurate passers he has ever seen. Colt just needs someone like Coach Walsh from SF. Someone who can see his ultimate potential not someone who just ticks all the blocks at a combine.
