In case anyone missed it – and I am sure many have, the University of Hawaii Wahine softball team has started the year at a blistering rate. The Wahine have started the 2012 softball season 21-0, beating every team in their path and garnering a national ranking of 18. Now the Wahine welcome in two top 10 teams as part of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament.
The Wahine host the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament, March 13-18, 2012. The ‘Bows will battle No. 6 Texas, Marist, No. 1/2 California, No. 21/22 Texas A&M, and Winthrop in the six team tourney at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The eyes of collegiate softball will be watching to see what happens this week in Honolulu as four ranked teams plus a scrappy Marist team and a tough Wintrhop team that defeated No. 10 Tennessee earlier this season battle it out in the five-day tournament.
This should be a great few days for the Wahine to see where they are really at as far as the national picture goes. If they are able to get out of the tournament with a few wins, then they will more than likely be pushed into the top 10 or 15 in the national rankings. This is also a great chance for the Wahine to make a statement. Beat number 1 Cal and Number 6 Texas, and you are making a great case to jump into the top 5 nationally.
The Rainbow Wahine are off to its best start with its longest win-streak in school history at 21-0. The ‘Bows have been winning with a combination of strong hitting, stingy pitching and a solid defense. In the recently released NCAA rankings, UH comes into this week ranked in the top 15 in six categories. The ‘Bows are No. 1 with a 0.68 ERA; No. 4 with 1.52 home runs per game; No. 6 with a 0.575 slugging percentage; No. 8 in slugging percentage; and No. 14 in fielding percentage.
Get out to the Wahine Softball Stadium starting today through the weekend and support the Wahine softball team as they try to stay undefeated.
