More often than not you will read that Bryant Moniz lead his team to a victory using his arm and throwing for multiple touchdowns. One part of this statement remains true; Moniz did lead his team to a victory, only this time he used his legs to do it.
Moniz ran for a career-best 121 yards and three touchdowns and Hawaii beat visiting Colorado 34-17 in the season opener for both teams Saturday night, extending the Buffaloes’ road woes and spoiling the coaching debut of new Colorado head coach of Jon Embree. The Warriors also got a little revenge, paying Colorado back for the loss that the Buffaloes handed them last year in Boulder.
Moniz led the nation in passing last year, and will probably lead the nation again this year. However this game was all about his legs, as he ran all over the Colorado defense on his way to rushing for three touchdowns and throwing for another.
This was a pretty surprising performance from Moniz, who last year became just the 11th FBS quarterback to surpass 5,000 yards in a season. Moniz was 20 of 33 for 178 yards, far below his 360-yard average last year.
Hawaii is off to a nice start, opening the season with a win in their last year in the WAC. Hawaii will look to continue the momentum next week when they fly to the mainland for a two-week road trip to take on the Washington Huskies out of the PAC 12 (formerly PAC 10) and UNLV, out of the Mountain West.
