A large earthquake struck off Alaska’s Aleutian islands but did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami this morning, officials said. That means no tsunami warning for Hawaii, which is a good thing
The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1, struck 16 miles north-northwest of Attu, Alaska at 9:10 a.m. near the epicenter (8:10 a.m. Hawaii time), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said that a tsunami is not expected. “However, in coastal areas of intense shaking, locally generated tsunamis can be triggered by underwater landslides,” center officials said.
There were no immediate reports of damage. We will continue to monitor this until all is said and done.
