Two of the most dominant high school football teams in Hawaii are set to square off in the division 1 state football title. The 2011 division 1 football championship will feature ILH contender Punahou against always dominant OIA contender Kahuku.
For the ninth straight year — spanning the existence of classified brackets — the Interscholastic League of Honolulu’s representative will play for the D-I championship. Just a quick sidebar, this begs the question, should more than 1 ILH team be invited to the state football tournament.
The Hawaii state football title is always a big deal, and the 2011 version of the game will be no different.
Punahou will play for the state football title for the third time, their first trip since 2005, when Kahuku beat them in the championship game that year. That is the only team to beat Punahou in the state championships from the years they have made it.
Of course everyone from both of the 2005 teams are gone, but I guess you could still consider this a chance for Punahou to get redemption on Kahuku.
As most people know, it seems like Kahuku plays in the state title game just about every year. The program on the North Shore of Oahu always churns out a great team, and this year’s team makes it to the state championship having lost only one game all year, an early season game to Farrington.
So who wins the game? There are thousands of supporters for each school, all of whom will be out in force at Aloha Stadium this Friday night for the big game.
With the way UH is playing, this may be the biggest football game in the state this year.
