The University of Hawaii and its officials are on high-alert and trying to warn students about leaving their drinks unattended because of a recent date rape incident that was reported on campus. It seems that this is starting to make some headway, and more than likely there will be other reports.
According to UH, the student was at the Manoa Gardens eatery and bar last Friday when she was given a drink by two males she did not know. The student reported having no memory of the rest of the night and later waking up in an off-campus apartment with a person she didn’t know.
The big question is this; how many of these cases go unreported, and how prevalent is the date rape drug on the UH campus? If I were to guess I would say that the drug is probably more prevalent on campus than we think. For every incident that is reported (which lets be honest is not many) how many go unreported?
The university said the student reported “symptoms consistent with the ingestion of date-rape drug substances,” including rapid onset of intoxication out of proportion to the amount of alcohol consumed and memory loss.
Females on the UH campus should always be alert, and even more so when they are out having a few drinks with friends. Right now everyone is on alert because of the reported incident, however, it is always a good idea to never leave a drink unattended. I would go so far as to watch the bartender pour your drink before you even take it.
This, like many other incidents will pass, but women on the UH campus – and everywhere else for that matter, should always stay alert.
