Diamond Head is one of the more fascinating hikes on the island of Oahu. Wildly popular with tourists, the hike is easy enough for anyone, yet still offers amazing views and provides the hiker with plenty of history from WWII.
Diamond Head State Monument is 475-acres of a tuff cone that was created by an explosive eruption of steam and ash that happened over 100,000 years ago. While most tourists just want to see the view at the top, there is also plenty of Hawaiian legend that goes along with the area.
Hawaiian Legend states that Hi’iaka (sister of Pele, the fire goddess), gave it the name Le’ahi because the summit resembles the forehead (lae) of the Ahi fish.
The trail itself is a 0.7 mile mostly paved hike that takes you all the way from the crater floor to the lookout, which is 760 feet above the starting position of the hike. The summit offers amazing panoramic views of Honolulu and the surrounding areas.
Although the hike is not too long, it will take you over an hour for a round trip, and that is if you don’t stop at all. Once you get closer to the summit you will find yourself having to climb a number of stairs that lead you to the top. In between the stairs and the summit is a maze of old jail cells and bunkers from WWII.
The hike is definitely a must do for any hiking enthusiast. The overall hike isn’t hard, but the reward at the summit is well worth it.
