The funeral service for HPD officer Eric Charles Fontes has been set for Sept. 30 at Borthwick Mortuary in Honolulu. Officer Fontes was killed during a routine traffic stop this past Tuesday. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Services will begin at 5:30 p.m.
Officer Fontes was originally born on Molokai, so this is where he will actually be laid to rest on Oct. 8 at Ka Hale Laa O lerusalema Hou Church. Burial will be at Hoolehua Cemetery. If you are planning to attend, dress is aloha attire, and the family had asked that flowers be OMMITTED.
Fontes, who was a six-year police veteran assigned to the Kapolei substation, was on the median of Farrington Highway near Ko Olina with other officers at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday when a pickup truck driven by a 20-year-old Waianae man hit him from behind. Fontes died at Pali Momi Medical Center from his injuries. Another officer was injured in the crash and is in stable condition at the Queen’s Medical Center.
Fontes leaves behind wife, Li Ann; daughter Corlie Li Stephens; son, Layne Hironaka; 3 grandchildren; mother, Lottie Haia Burrows; stepmother, Ann Fontes; step father, Leslie Burrows; sister, Leah Burrows-Nuuanu; and brothers Aaron Fontes, Leslie Burrows Jr., Leonard Burrows, Derek Fontes and Donald Rangasan.
This is a sad day, although family knows that he is now with God. Go pay your respects to one of HPD’s excellent officers who not only worked to protect others, but worked tirelessly within his community as well.
RIP Officer Eric Charles Fontes.
