Scientists doing work in the Mauna Kea observatories of Gemini and Keck have just discovered the largest black hole known to exist. How big are the newly discovered black holes? Each one is 10 billion times the size of our sun. Yes you read that right, 10 billion.
A team led by an astronomer from the University of California at Berkeley discovered the two gigantic black holes in clusters of galaxies 300 million light years away. That’s relatively close on the galactic scale. Doesn’t seem to close to me. The previous black hole record-holder is as large as 6 billion suns. The telescopes at the Mauna Kea Observatories are continually responsible for new and amazing discoveries, this is just the latest.
Black Hole
So what exactly is a black hole? A black hole is formed by the collapse of a super-size star. It’s a region where nothing, not even light, can escape. The scientists say their findings suggest differences in the way black holes grow, depending on the size of the galaxy.
The research and news of the discovery of these huge black holes was released Monday by the journal Nature.
