Heavy and continuous rains over Windward, Oahu have created a flood advisory for the Windward side. The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory at 7 a.m. this morning and extended it until 1 p.m.
The advisory includes Punaluu, Kahuku, Laie, Hauula and Kaawa. Forecasters say rain had been falling at about an inch an hour for several hours this morning and nearly 3 inches was recorded at the Wilson Tunnel.
Stream water levels rose significantly earlier this morning, but the rise appears to have slowed as of about 9 a.m. Nusiance flooding of Kamehameha Highway near Punaluu and Haaula is possible because of high stream levels, forecasters said.
Residents are asked to take precautionary measures and stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. We may also experience some high-surf on all shores today.
The rains can also cause hazardous driving conditions because of ponding and reduced visibility. Kamehameha Highway and mauka portions of the Likelike Highway and H-3 Freeway could be affected.
