Garrison Keillor is bringing his world famous radio stage production “A Prairie Home Companion” to Hawaii for two shows on December 31st. The show is being brought over thanks to Hawaii Public Radio and Hawaii Pacific University, said Judy Neale, director of promotions for HPR. Celebrate new years by checking out this timeless classic.
Chances are – especially for the younger crowd, that you may not know the name Garrison Keillor, but you have more than likely heard of A Prairie Home Companion. The show has been going for years, has become a pop culture phenomenon, and has been produced and reproduced by people around the world, it also spawned a movie of the same name. Some of the biggest stars in Hollywood have participated in productions of the show, including an all-star cast that was tapped for the movie.
In a statement released by Keillor, he said “New Year’s Eve is supposed to be lighthearted, optimistic, even joyful, and for our listeners across America and overseas, Hawaii represents those things.”
“New Year’s Eve tends to be a disappointing night, too much alcohol in crowded rooms with loud people. I can imagine someone sitting on a farm in Minnesota on Dec. 31 and hearing soft-voiced Hawaiian singers and slack-key guitars and smelling the flowers and imagining beautiful people and deciding that 2012 may be a happy year after all.”
Garrison Keillor has brought his show here before, back in 2006 the team was here for a few shows, all of which were wildly successful.
This year’s shows, which are being billed as “A Prairie Home Companion’s Hawaiian New Year’s Eve with Garrison Keillor,” will include a countdown at the end of the second hour to sync up with midnight on the East Coast.
Keillor said that he plans to use local talent for the Hawaii productions, but no cast has been named yet. Details are below.
