The University of Hawaii women’s soccer team’s final Western Athletic Conference season is over after a 2-1 loss to New Mexico State in the WAC tournament opening round today in Fresno, Calif.
First-year coach Michele Nagamine went 5-12-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the WAC regular season. That was good for third place in the eight-team league.
UH freshman midfielder Krystal Pascua scored unassisted in the 19th minute from about 25 yards out to give UH a 1-0 lead, but the sixth-seeded Aggies evened the match in the 42nd minute and the teams took a 1-1 tie into halftime.
NMSU got the go-ahead score on its third effort on a counterattack in the 63rd minute. The Rainbow Wahine were unable to get a clear shot on goal to equalize in the waning minutes.
It was UH’s final season in the WAC before leaving for the Big West Conference next season.
Obviously there will be no national tournament for the wahine, so we look forward to next year’s season.
