In an interesting turn of events, a Kahuku student has come forth and confessed to cutting down a Kahuku Banyan tree as part of a prank with some other students. The 17-year old student confessed to cutting down a 50-year-old banyan tree on campus in an early morning Monday prank with several other seniors.
Lea Albert, Department of Education Windward Oahu District administrator, said the entire Kahuku community is upset in what she described as “extremely thoughtless” action.
She said because of privacy laws she is not able to discuss the situation or what actions were taken against the male students.
This is indeed quite an offense, especially in Hawaii. It shows no respect for anyone and was done in very poor judgment.
The 17-year old male student – whose name has not been released and probably won’t be, is facing criminal property damage charges.
The Banyan tree that was cut down was located in the middle of the Kahuku high school campus and also offered the only shade on campus.
We will follow up with this, but a tree like this can’t be replaced so we will see what the community does.
