The Maui Fire Department continues its search for a missing kayaker. However, it will no longer have the help of the Coast Guard, as they suspended their search at 6:18 p.m. Thursday. Both the MFD and the Coast Guard have been searching for Torry Durrell, a 55-year old kayaker who has been missing since Tuesday.
Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary crews have covered a total of 272 square miles during the search after they found out Durrell’s kayak was found about 200 yards off Kalepolepo Beach Park this past Tuesday.
The Coast Guard said it was not an easy choice to decide to call off the search on Thursday. Rescuers took into consideration the probability of survival, weather, drift and other factors. If new information surfaces about Durrell’s whereabouts, the Coast Guard will resume searching.
The Maui Fire Department helicopter and ground crews are searching for Durrell today.
Durrell is 55 years old, has grey hair and blue eyes. If you have any info or have seen him somewhere please contact the Maui Fire Department.
